This project is actually around the corner from my office.
This week, instead of the typical white walls in the hallway of the third floor in the Architecture Building, I had the view of interior design junior studio projects. I spoke with interior design professor Jo Hasell about the projects. She explained that the students are working with P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School. The school is affiliated with UF’s College of Education.
The interior design students worked in teams of three to put together a proposal for a new elementary school. In addition to working on an overall concept, each team member chose one of three learning communities to focus their designs. The learning communities allow for a team-teaching approach and are divided by grade: 1. kindergarten and first grade, 2. second and third grade and 3. fourth and fifth grade.
The projects were presented to key stakeholders and will be revising their designs based on the feedback.

This is the view directly across from my office.

Whenever you have time to spare on campus, be sure to check out the student work on display in the Architecture Gallery.

This week, the School of Architecture’s Studio Mexico program is presenting “Placemaking in the Historic Tequila Valley, Jalisco.” William Tilson, assistant dean for international studies and service learning, gave a tour of the exhibit to alumni Carlos Barrios and Rob Blakeslee, now practicing in Orlando (above).
All three men agreed that students bring fresh approaches to design problems abroad because they do not have any preconceived ideas about how things “should” look.
Next week, the gallery will feature 21 landscape architecture student projects from the fall Paris Program, including a re-imagining of the Jardin des Tuileres for the 21st century.

Last week, I received an email from architecture professor Charlie Hailey sharing the news of a book discussion that will take place at 8 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Goerings Book Store here in Gainesville. Charlie will be discussing his book, “Campsite: Architectures of Duration and Place.”
Charlie’s email reminded me of a service learning project he and his students worked on last spring, and I was able to see first hand over the summer. On May 8, Charlie invited me to the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) situated in Woodland Park in southeast Gainesville. The club was hosting a work day to make several improvements, including the completion of the community garden and outdoor classroom Charlie and his students designed and built.
During the spring semester, Charlie and architecture graduate student Everald Colas led a graduate seminar course focusing on a design-build project, where the students would build with their own hands a project they designed. It gives the students the opportunity to learn the nuances of bringing their design to life.
But this project went one step further. It gave the students the opportunity to inspire the next generation of architects.
